It this talk I give a pedagogical overview of recent results obtained in quantum gravity using effective field theory techniques. I describe how to probe quantum gravity with astrophysical observations in a model independent fashion. I emphasize that the low energy regime of any theory of quantum gravity must at least contain two classical massive states beyond the classical graviton which has recently been observed in the form of gravitational waves. These states could manifest themselves in the form of massive waves that could be produced in astrophysical processes. In particular, I describe how the new degrees of freedom could be discovered using black hole or neutron star mergers.
